    One of the most anticipated award ceremonies of the year, the 88th Academy Awards was recently hosted, and let's just say it didn't cease to surprise us for even one moment. Despite receiving negative criticism for the prevalent racism in the nomination of actors, Oscars 2016 ended up surprising the world in innumerable ways. From the opening monologue of Chris Rock to the performance of Lady Gaga to the actors and movies that won, the 88th Academy Awards emerged to be a ceremony that would be remembered forever. If that wasn't enough, Leonardo DiCaprio finally won the award that has eluded him for over 20 years. If we had to pick the most cherishable moments from the big night, they would have to be these.


1. 2016 is the historic year when Leonardo DiCaprio finally bagged an Oscar under the Best Actor category for his portrayal of frontiersman Hugh Glass in the movie The Revenant.

2. Leonardo DiCaprio began his career in film career in 1991 and received the much awaited Academy Award after 6 nominations. He had earlier been nominated for movies like What's Eating Glibert Grape (1993), The Aviator (2005), Blood Diamond (2007) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2014).

3. After he was bestowed with the Oscar, DiCaprio stunned the audience by focusing on climate change in his acceptance speech. Urging people to work collectively and stop procrastinating, Leonardo DiCaprio concluded his speech saying "Let us not take this planet for granted, I do not take tonight for granted."

4. Much to everybody's surprise, Spotlight, a biographical crime drama film, received the Oscar under the Best Picture category beating competitors like The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road. The movie won millions of hearts for bringing into light the widespread child sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests.

5. Another historic win that one must never forget about was that of Ennio Morricone's. This 87 year old brilliant music composer was bestowed with an Oscar for the Best Original Score in The Hateful Eight after 500 movie credits and 6 nominations.

6. It wouldn't be fair to not mention the strongest event of the 88th Academy Awards night, Chris Rock's opening monologue. Rock didn't leave any stone unturned in exposing the deplorable treatment people of colour receive when it comes to the film industry. Rock went on to plea to the audience saying "We want opportunities".

The Academy Awards have always been a crucial event for every movie-lover across the globe.
