A lot of things are quite unique about this stark, funny and original mystery novel which has won several awards since it was first published. For instance, it is one of those very few novels which was published simultaneously in separate editions for adults and children and may be the only novel in which the chapters are marked in a prime number sequence rather than the usual one. However, once you start reading the book, all the supposed unusual stuff starts falling into place beautifully and complements the essence of the book.

This novel is narrated in the first-person perspective by the 15 year old Christopher Boone, who describes himself as ‘a mathematician with some behavioral difficulties.’ When he discovers the slain body of Wellington, his neighbor’s poodle, he sets out investigate and chronicles the same in this very book that we are reading as a part of a school assignment. Even though it isn’t clearly mentioned anywhere, it is evident that Christopher suffers from Asperger’s syndrome and his investigation is at times aided and at others times hampered by the rich idiosyncrasies of his autistic brain. The amateur detective in Christopher uncovers a really tangled plot than what was first apparent and affects his personal life in a huge way. What follows is a heart rendering tale of Christopher and how he manages to copes up with all the emotional upheaval. The book does provide a sort of closure and leaves us all on a rather optimistic note!

One of the most striking features of this novel is the brilliant portrayal of the darker side of adult behavior through the eyes of an innocent and extremely logical brain. It recounts a story of how the autistic brain looks at the world around and how it faces difficulty in comprehending and reacting to emotions. It touches the reader’s heart in a way that one is left wondering about one’s own intuitions and habits of perception.

The book is absolutely unputdownable once you start with it. Do grab a copy if you want to read a novel which will stay with you forever!
